Grand Knight's Message
Good evening my brother Knights. As I am writing this, it was just one week ago that New York and Washington D.C. were attacked by a bunch of crazy people. People who do not have any respect for life at all. We as a nation have to stand tall and denounce this type of, and all, terrorism. The nation is in shock, but we will not fold. Let us keep these people in our prayers and their families. All who have died or who were injured, along with those that are missing.
The first Saturday in October is the Marathon for Non-Public Education. Let's get out and show our support. Also, the Sunday brunch is the second Sunday of October. This month's general membership meeting is also steak fry night.
God Bless America,
Dick Smith
Grand Knight
For these people we pray.

Overall, the carnival did well. Gross income was up around $2,000 from last year despite the rain that fell on Sunday. St. Tim's Grill was down $270 from last year. We added pork chops on a stick, which did quite well to the tune of 350 sold. Many thanks to the 28 Knights and 12 Ladies who worked the grill, along with many of the St. Tim's parishioners. Also, a special thanks to Dave Lodermeier and Al Loerzel who co-chaired the Grill Friday night of the carnival.

FREE VACATION !!
You should have recently received a postcard in the mail, outlining some of the advantages of a Knights of Columbus fixed-interest annuity. The guarantees offered by the program will give you smooth sailing through these troubled times by taking away all risk of any loss.
The mailing included a postcard to return to me to set an appointment to visit about our programs. If you return the card or contact me to arrange for an appointment, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a weekend vacation at a Quadna condominium in Hill City,MN.
If you purchase an annuity for a minimum of $1000, or add at least $1000 to an existing Knights of Columbus Annuity, your name will also be entered in a second drawing. The purchase of each life insurance policy or long term care policy will also qualify you for this second drawing. The winner of the second drawing will receive a one-week vacation at this same resort.
The qualification period to be entered into the drawings is August 1, 2001 through October 31, 2001. The vacations are for lodging only, and do not include transportation or meals. The vacation dates are subject to availability at the resort.

There are a few things that I need to bring to your attention, mostly being a council member, but secondly as the district deputy for this area.
I, along with Sharon, had the pleasure and distinction of attending the Supreme convention in Toronto last August. We had a great time visiting Niagara Falls and other attractions with the state council entourage. But more importantly, we saw the "big picture" of the Knights organization and BIG is the key word here. We talked and discussed policy with Brother Knights from all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and the surrounding islands in the Caribbean. We prayed together each day and celebrated our bonds as Christians, Catholics, and Knights. The order is strong and will continue to grow stronger in membership, insurance protection, and service to others. It will grow if we want it to. So I ask you to consider in sponsoring a new member to the Order, investing in the Order's benefit plans, and to get involved with the projects and programs of the Order and your council.
On Sunday, September 23, I was honored by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd for the work I have done with the recovery center on the main campus and with Rose Center in St. Paul. Sharon & I celebrated Mass with their community and then were treated to brunch at their convent. In my remarks, I stated that I was just a small cog in the entire machine that completed the projects and that all I am is the go-between for the different groups. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right bunch of people. So I accepted this honor and recognition in the name of the Blaine KC council family.
The seminarian that the council is sponsoring, Paul Jarvis, is back home from his studies in Israel. He was to have studied there for the fall semester but with the prospect of full-scale war in the Holy Land, he opted to come home. Paul also got to go to Rome and was within feet of the Holy Father during a large Papal audience. He thanks the council for the money sent to him so that he could come back home and will come and visit with us during one of our meetings and talk about his experiences abroad.
Remember that October means the Sunday Breakfast starts again; the first one is October 14th. I can use any and all help. Also, if you have an idea for a change in the menu, I'm all ears. We'll keep the basics, but am open to new items to put on the menu. Please help the council out by working a shift or at least stopping by and having a bite with us.
Finally, I want to express my deep appreciation to the council for their support on my endeavors towards the diaconate program. The council has decided that not only should we pray for vocations but also we should support the cause financially and the council has done this by providing a full scholarship, tuition & books, for both Sharon and me. This is a big financial commitment that the council has made and we are most grateful for this support. Please continue to keep both of us in your prayers as we go through the process of learning and discerning our call. So far, we have class on Monday night and two on Saturday and this will go on for the next three years. There are 16 couples in the first year class, of which four are KC members. A little bit about deacons. Deacons are not ordained unto the priesthood but unto the ministry. Deacons assist bishops in their work of service. They are clergy and can preside at weddings, funerals, and baptisms. They assist the bishop and priests in the celebration of the divine mysteries, above all the Eucharist, in the distribution of Holy Communion, in the proclamation of the Gospel and preaching, and in dedicating themselves to the various ministries of charity. They are a proper and permanent rank of the hierarchy, the other two being priests and bishops.
I will try and write from time to time on my progress. Please keep Sharon, me and the other candidates, along with Paul Jarvis and all seminarians in your thoughts and prayers. You are in ours, really!
Marc Peters, DD

The Knights of Columbus has established a $1 million "Knights of Columbus Heroes Fund" for families of all full-time professional law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical personnel who have lost their lives or may yet lose their lives in the rescue and recovery efforts underway at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. The fund was announced by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson in a news conference Thursday, September 13th. Affected families will receive $3,000 from the Knights of Columbus in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by their loved ones. Additional information on the fund can be found at the Order's Web site, www.kofc.org. Families who qualify should call the Knights of Columbus at 1-800-380-9995. The Supreme Knight was joined by telephone with the organization's chaplain, Bishop Thomas V. Daily of Brooklyn, N.Y. Bishop Daily offered his prayers for the victims of the bombing and read from the statement Pope John Paul II released in the aftermath of the attacks.
The full text of Supreme Knight Anderson's statement follows:
"Today in the midst of this time of national mourning, on behalf of the Knights of Columbus, I announce the establishment of a $1 million "Knights of Columbus Heroes Fund" for the families of all full-time professional law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical personnel who have lost their lives or may yet lose their lives in the rescue and recovery efforts under way at the World trade Center and the Pentagon. Families of those brave men and women will each receive $3,000 from the Knights of Columbus in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by their loved ones. This gift is being offered along with our prayers. It is our hope that this money will help those families with immediate needs at this time. The gift is being made on behalf of the 1.6 million members of the Knights of Columbus and their families throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines and Mexico, and in the spirit of our priest founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, who established the Knights of Columbus here in New Haven in 1882 to protect, preserve and promote families, especially those affected by the death of a breadwinner. The Knights of Columbus has long felt a special association with the members of the law enforcement and firefighting fraternities. In fact, James T. Mullen, our first Supreme Knight, was president of the New Haven Fire Commission in the 1880's. Through several existing programs, the Knights of Columbus will also help, in a special way, members of our organization who may have been affected by the attacks. Through our Educational Trust Fund, children of Knights who were in the military, full-time law enforcement officers or full-time firemen killed or permanently disabled in New York or Washington as a result of this criminal action will be given full scholarships to any Catholic college or university. Established in 1944, this fund has financed the college educations of 263 children of Knights; nearly 800 children of members have qualified for this scholarship since its creation. Finally, in a special appeal sent to each of our 70 state presidents on Wednesday, I asked them to activate immediately their telephone/communications trees to urge our members and their families to volunteer as blood donors, for our local units to coordinate with local Red Cross chapters to sponsor blood drives and volunteer their facilities to host such drives. In 2000, nearly 400,000 of our members reported donating blood. Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones. We know that every American would like to reach out to these families. This is our way of offering a helping hand now."
The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people. With 1.6 million members, the Knights of Columbus at all levels distributes approximately $116 million to charitable causes annually. In addition, they volunteer approximately 56 million hours of service a year.
