Grand Knights Message
Greetings Knights and Ladies. At last months meeting, the rain, winds and hail came through the area. We were at the annex which is in the basement and no one realized the damage until we were on the way home. Hopefully no one had any serious property damage.
The Epiphany marathon went well. The Blaine and Epiphany Knights served 800 hot dogs and handed out 700 bags of chips. It was a warm and pleasant morning, which is always a plus when you work outside.
I was out of town on vacation but I understand the first 2 nd Sunday breakfast of the council year had a good turn out of parishioners. I would like to thank Garry Hallman who chaired the breakfast and all of you who came and worked. Next month we will be serving egg bake.
In closing, November 16 th, before the membership meeting, there will be a Memorial mass for deceased members and family members. Let’s show our support.
I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving. May you travel safely and enjoy good health.

Memorial Mass
The council memorial mass will be November 16th
at 7:00 pm at St. Tim's Church. The memorial mass
is when we honor deceased members of the council
and any deceased family members. The Ladies Auxiliary will provide Hor d' oeuvres for our members and guests in the hospitality center after mass. Immediately following, the men and ladies will have their monthly meetings. If you have any questions please call one of the officers.
Senior Party
The senior Christmas party is here again. It is on Friday December 2nd. Our usual arrangements are well under way. We have the Sweet Adelines lined up as our entertainment. We have talked to Diane at the church and she will be helping to prepare the meal. We need help from the council. First, we will need donations of turkeys. Diane will need help deboning those turkeys. We need your help setting up on that Friday. Last, but certainly not least, we need a hot dish and salad from as many members of the council as possible. Even if you do not plan on helping out, a hot dish and salad dropped off would be greatly appreciated.
2nd Sunday Breakfast
The second Sunday breakfast of the council year will be November 13th in the St. Tim's Hospitality Center. Shifts are 7:00 am to 10:30, 10:30 to 1:30 or whatever time you can donate to work. We will be doing an egg bake. Please call Dick Dols if you are interested in working one of these shifts.
Insurance Notes
QUESTION: I think I made a mistake and I’m not sure how to correct it. About two years ago, I cashed in my Knights of Columbus life insurance for a Variable Universal Life Policy (VUL) with [company name deleted]. My new financial advisor was very convincing that it would cover my insurance needs while allowing me to save for retirement. I have found out since that it was a very poor decision and will result in the loss of several thousands of dollars. Worse, I refused to get input from my KC agent before doing this. Can I get my old policies back?
ANSWER: Unfortunately, you cannot get your original KC policies back once you have surrendered them for their cash value. However, if you are still insurable, you can certainly apply for new policies. Your agent will assist you in this.
You discovered the hard way one of the less pleasant issues of the insurance business – replacement! Before replacing an existing KC policy, you should ALWAYS get both sides of the story and weigh the information carefully. VUL is very complex and requires diligent monitoring by the owner. Cash value growth is too often “oversold” by the financial advisor (insurance agent) but has had a questionable performance history. You were sold based on high potential rates of return, but were not told about the myriad of fees and charges, as well as the danger that poor market performance would have on your VUL policy. As you rightly pointed out, you would be much further ahead right now if you would have kept your KC policies. Thank you for your letter and let’s hope that others might learn from it!
