Grand Knights Message

Greetings Knights and ladies. I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and a good Lenten season. The spring steak fry had a good turn out of 45 people. Al Loerzel did a good job with shopping and food preparation. The speakers after the meal were short and informative. The last breakfast was April 22 and the Tootsie Roll Drive was the following weekend, which I will report on next month.

Congratulations to Marland Kimmes and Jerome Besch who were initiated in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree March 24. Welcome to the council.

In closing, the May membership meeting will be election of officers. Now is the time to think about running for an office. It is an experience you will not forget. The good times, the challenges, the great people I have met and most of all the many excellent projects and programs the council completes make it fun and exciting. One office, Deputy Grand Knight, needs to be filled as 07-08 will be my last year as Grand Knight. Please call one of the Trustees if you are interested or have questions.

Yours in Christ

Dick Dols
Grand Knight

The Knights of Columbus: In Service to One. In Service to All.

What’s in an emblem?

The emblem of the Knights of Columbus dates from the second Supreme Council meeting May 12, 1883, when James T. Mullen, who was then supreme Knight, designed it.

The emblem indicates a shield mounted upon a Formee cross (having the arms at the center and expanded toward the ends). The shield is that associated with a medieval knight. The Formee cross is the representation of a traditional artistic design of the cross of Christ through which all graces of redemption were procured for mankind. This then represents the Catholic spirit of the order.

Mounted on the shield are three objects. Standing vertically is a fasces – bundle of rods bound together about an axe with the blade projecting. Crosses behind the fasces are an anchor and a dagger or short sword.

The fasces is from the Roman days and was carried before magistrates as an emblem of authority. As a symbol of authority, it must exist in any tightly bonded and efficiently operating organization. The anchor is the mariner’s symbol for Christopher Columbus, patron of the order. The short sword or dagger was the weapon of a knight when he was engaged upon an errand of mercy.

The shield and its symbols express Catholic knighthood in organized, merciful action, and the letters at the top of the emblem – K of C – proclaim the specific form of activity.

Keep open June 29th, which is the council year-end dinner. There will be a social hour, a two-meat meal followed by an awards presentation. More details in the June Guidepost.

Computer Recycling Event

A new Minnesota law effective July 1st, 2006 requires consumers to recycle CRT and LCD monitors.   They can no longer be tossed into the garbage!  We will properly recycle your old computers, monitors, printers, software, and other computer equipment.  If you have some old computer equipment that needs to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way but don't want to pay the high prices required for that disposal, we may be able to help.

The council is sponsoring a one day event to recycle computer/electronics equipment.  The cost to recycle monitors is only $10, and printer recycling cost is only $5.  All other computer equipment recycling is FREE Televisions will not be accepted.

Free recycling on desktop and laptop computers, speakers, keyboards, mice, software, cables, VCR players, DVD players, printer ink and toner cartridges, and old cell phones.

To the Knights of Columbus and ladies:

Thank you so much for all your appreciative comments about the new KC banner.  It has been great for us to know how much everyone likes it.  Thank you also for your contribution to our labor.  Please know that your thanks are what mean the most to us!  We will be donating your labor contribution to St. Tim’s in the name of the KC’s toward the AED in honor of our KC’s and ladies that have struggled in the present and past with heart disease.
