Grand Knight’s Message
Greetings Knights and ladies. Congratulations to Terry Wagner who became a member April 24. We had a nice turnout at the April steak fry with Tim Zinda as our main speaker. The last fund raiser for the council year, the Tootsie Roll Drive was a huge success despite two cold weekends. Many thanks to
Jerome Hacker who arranged the sites, co-coordinated workers and was responsible for all monies. May was a quiet month for the council. The state convention was attended by two of our council members. More information on the convention in next months Guidepost. Two fun events are coming up, the year end dinner in June and the golf outing in July. Let’s have a good turn out for both. Everyone have a good summer.

SURPRISE! YOUR LTC PREMIUMS WENT UP!!!
Question: I am very, very upset! After paying for over 3 years on a nursing home insurance policy from [company name withheld], I’m being told my premiums are going up by 40%! I was told by their agent that my premiums would never go up. I contacted the company and they referred me to my contract. What can I do?
Answer: Your case is certainly not unique! Unfortunately, the company that issued your policy is correct. I researched your policy and found that when you bought it, your premium was one of the cheapest available. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case.
Every Long Term Care (LTC) insurance policy contains provisions for raising premiums, as long as the increase is approved by the Minnesota Department of Commerce. Apparently, the company determined that it had originally underpriced their LTC policies and found that in order to meet their obligations, they would have to raise premiums on these old policies. Several well known companies have done this, causing their policy holders to cancel their LTC policies or pay much higher premiums. Naturally, this can cause a great deal of distress to unsuspecting policyholders.
Your unfortunate experience clearly demonstrates why it is so important to shop for QUALITY before PRICE. Purchase insurance only from companies that have extremely high ratings, since this is your best indicator that the company is on solid financial footing. These companies will be less likely to raise your premiums in the future, saving you money and stress!
