Sorry that I had to miss the last membership meeting. I wanted to be there but I could not make it. You know, there are some things the Grand Knight has to do, and one of those is going to a wake. The wake I went to was for a Knight from another council. Tom Kuka was from Watertown, Minnesota. He was all Knight, 100%, he was a 4th Degree Knight and an officer. He, like all Knights who have passed on, will be missed. So, that is where I was instead of being at the meeting. I want to thank Ken Resler for taking over the meeting. I hear he did a good job. Good for you Ken.
We have our fish fries coming up in a few weeks. We can always use more help, so please come and help out. We also have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree in Anoka. Don't forget about the 2nd Sunday breakfast in February. I also want to thank all of you who helped at the Concertina party.
God Bless,
Dick Smith
Grand Knight

Before you know it, we are starting the Lenten Fish Fry Bake Sales. February 8th is the beginning of our best, not to mention the fish fry customers', favorite fund-raiser. Contact Margo Arett or Roberta Hacker to volunteer at this fund-raiser, even for an hour or so.
Officer nominations will be held in March.

As we end the year 2001 and start the year 2002, financial planning becomes a focus for all of us. Year-end statements arrive all during the month of January. We all look at them and try to determine what happened in our financial picture in the last year.
What many of my clients do, and what I recommend for each of you is to take a sheet of paper and prepare a balance sheet for the year-end. This is similar to the financial statement that is prepared in a loan application.
First, list the name and balance of each outstanding account, dividing them into a list of assets, and a second list of debts, or liabilities. When determining the value of fixed assets such as a home, or car, use what you believe to be the sales value less the marketing costs to arrive at a conservative value. The cash value of your life insurance policies would be considered an asset. You can use the balance of your IRA or 401k accounts, but you must realize that it is a non taxed asset and true value would be an after tax number.
When you have all of your assets and liabilities listed, total each of them and subtract liabilities to arrive at your Net Worth. You cannot only make comparisons each year to the growth or loss in each individual category, but also compare the total figure from year to year to see if you are achieving you goals for family financial planning.
If you need assistance or advice in doing this financial exercise, call your Knights of Columbus Benefits Representative. Remember, we exist for our members, and your future is our business.
God Bless and Happy New Year,
Mike Grommesh
