Grand Knights Message

Greetings Knights and ladies. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer despite the hot weather in July. I will recap three activities that were held in late June. The year end dinner had a disappointing number of people attending despite an excellent meal by the staff of Blainebrook. Everyone there had a good time. The Blazing 4th parade was held on a nice day with a good turn out of Knights and ladies to ride the float and pass out Tootsie Rolls. Thanks to Katrina Silverdahl and her friend who rode the float as queens.

Speaking of queens, if any member has a daughter or granddaughter who would be interested in riding the 4th degree float this summer or next summer let me know.

Lastly, Installation of Officers at St. Patrick's church in Cedar had an excellent turn out of officers from our council. St. Patrick's, a new church, is quite unique as they have windows behind the altar. Beyond the windows is a beautiful grove of pine trees.

Looking ahead, keep in mind Family Night at the Dome August 23rd.

In September, we have St. Tim's Carnival and the Men’s Fishing Trip.

In closing, the Catholic Spirit had an article about the Knights of Columbus setting new records for charitable giving and volunteer hours in 2004. Total contributions to charity was $135,753,039, and an estimated 63 million hours of charitable work last year.

God Bless
Dick Dols Grand Knight

Help Wanted

Knights needed to chair and co-chair some activities this coming year. Some of the shifts at the Carnival need someone to run them, as I will not be available all shifts. For the 2nd Sunday Breakfast, starting in October, I would like to see a different chairman each month. Duties are to shop for food, open up Sunday morning, co-ordinate help and close up around 1:30. The Fish Fries starting February 24, 06, need a co-chairman to publicize the event, order food, pick up some food items, be responsible for finances, and take inventory after each Fish Fry. It would be a ten week committment.

Volunteers please call Dick Dols G.K.

Insurance Notes

QUESTION: A financial planner from another insurance company is proposing a Variable Universal Life insurance policy. He says it will allow me to save money for retirement and will earn from 8-12%. He suggests that I use the money from my KC policy to help pay for it. The numbers look really, really good, but I’d like your opinion.

ANSWER: 8-12%? I don’t believe it, and neither should you. Don’t let the term “financial planner” fool you, either. He is a salesman and is trying to sell you a policy that is unlikely to perform as he suggests. Unfortunately, he also wants to “churn” you out of your existing KC policies to do this. Variable Universal Life (VUL) insurance is simply life insurance with a cash value account. You are allowed to choose side funds (mutual type funds that you DO NOT own) to place excess premium dollars in with the hope that the funds will perform marvelously. History has shown that most VUL policies have poor performance records. What he is NOT telling you is that VUL policies have significant expenses and fees, and fewer of your dollars get invested in the side funds each year. Worst of all, if you take money out of the policy for ANY reason, the policy may lapse and leave you with a very large tax bill, no money and no life insurance! You lose, and so do your loved ones.

Before you make a decision about your life insurance or financial program, please call the Knights of Columbus. We promise to treat you ethically and give you HONEST answers to your questions.
